Immersive Interstate Learning Experience thanks to Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER)
What an incredible adventure 20 students and eight staff had on their recent educational trip to Canberra during a very frosty June! This trip was an unparalleled opportunity for everyone to deepen their understanding of Australian history, civics, and science, while creating lasting memories. Over four action packed days, the St Francis Xavier Nauiyu travellers experienced multi plane flights, bus trips, lots of walking, plenty of sight seeing and huge amounts of learning. They even got to play in the snow!!
Excursions like these are vital for students but come with a significant price tag, particularly for schools in very remote communities such as Daly River. The extra time and travel costs all add up and can prove to be a barrier in providing equitable educational opportunities. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. We are extremely grateful for the significant support granted by the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER). Thanks to this vital program, the School received a generous rebate of $2,040.00 per student which made this immersive learning experience possible.
This trip was more than just a tour; it was an immersive learning experience that broadened horizons and fostered a deeper connection to the recent history of Australia. We are incredibly proud of the students for their engagement, curiosity, and fantastic behaviour throughout the journey.
SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE ACTION-PACKED TRIP
Day 1: Journey to the Capital
Our adventure began bright and early from SFX Daly River, leading us to Darwin for our flight south. After a quick stop in Melbourne, we touched down in Canberra and settled into our accommodation, buzzing with excitement for what was to come!
Day 2: Democracy in Action & Sporting Prowess
Students stepped into the shoes of citizens at the Museum of Australian Democracy with a "People Power and Making Change" program, seeing their classroom knowledge brought to life. Then, it was off to Parliament House for an inspiring guided tour, gaining insight into the legislative process of our democracy. In the afternoon, they channeled their inner athletes at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) with an energetic Sportex Program.
Day 3: Discovering Science & History
A day of exploration awaited us! We delved into the earth's wonders at Geoscience Australia, then paid our respects and learned powerful stories at the iconic Australian War Memorial. We even squeezed in a visit to the Reptile Park and journeyed back in time at the National Dinosaur Museum. The evening was rounded off with a cozy movie night.
Day 4: Snow Day Fun at Corin Forest
What better way to wrap up a Canberra trip than with a snow day! Our students had an absolute blast at Corin Forest, enjoying snow play and thrilling slides. It was a fantastic way to experience a different side of the Australian landscape and create some truly unforgettable moments!
A massive thank you again to the Australian Government's PACER initiative for making this rebate possible, significantly easing the financial burden for our families and ensuring this incredible educational opportunity was accessible to all. We truly appreciate the support of the entire St Francis Xavier Nauiyu community!
